The Boyfriend Jean

Come this spring, I believe I'll find myself gleefully singing the blues..

There's something about denim that adds a level of untouchable coolness to any outfit. It's iconic, all-American, hard-working, everyday. It can be a denim jacket, your favorite jeans, a button-down shirt, go-to summer cut-offs, a vest, a dress…the possibilities are endless. Even the same piece of denim, when styled differently, can evince a completely different spirit. Which frankly, is what good style (and good denim) is all about, isn't it?

Enter on the scene sometime in 2013: boyfriend jeans. (Not to be confused with circa-2009 punk rock-loving actual boyfriend's jeans, worn by girlfriends like Ashley Simpson.) I love boyfriend jeans when they fit just right. I love seeing how girls style them, keeping them just feminine enough. I love the concept, plus they bring a whole new level of chic-ness that hasn't yet arrived on the denim market yet. (I.e. skinny jeans, flare jeans, etc.) Considering the sea of skinnies we've all fallen victim to in the last 8 or so years, they really piqued my interest because they were a total refresher. But for the life of me, after trying them on in different stores for years and being unable to find just the right pair, I was starting to give up hope. (Are they really that unattainable? Is that why they're so cool?)

As a tiny treat to myself for having to battle a cold/cough/headache all week, I treated myself to a trip to Nordstrom and decided to give this pair a go. I'm glad to say: I finally found the perfect pair of boyfriend jeans. It feels like a huge accomplishment, honestly. After looking for them for years and finding a pair I truly love, I'm so exited to start styling them. They are so soft, and so incredibly comfortable. They come in tons of different shades and colors, so there is an option for everyone. I love them styled with a structured shirt like this white button down by Cloth & Stone. I kept the rest of the look totally simple: classic wayfarer sunnies, sharp black pumps, delicate gold bracelets and my favorite tote bag. And to brighten the entire look, a popped on a swipe of my favorite red lipstick, and learned something valuable: there's nothing a good pair of denim can't cure- including a cold.
