Our Mudroom Refresh Plans

Today I’m sharing our renovation plans for our mudroom! It’s safe to say that this space has been kind of an afterthought in our home renovation process. It’s usually a drop-off zone for laundry and recycling, but has the potential to be so much more.

Our mudroom is at the back of our house, with two windows and a door leading out to the back porch. To the right of the windows when you walk in is a set of glass-pane French doors leading to the laundry closet, and then the third wall is an empty canvas where we will be installing a custom hall tree. Since the walls and hall tree will be white, I thought painting the French doors a pretty shade of blue would make for some good contrast! Walking through the mudroom leads straight into the kitchen, so I’ll be choosing colors and fixtures that will complement each other across both spaces.

Below is the design I’ve come up with!

*A side note on the bell. Our dog Josie currently has a bell by the back door which she knows to ring when she wants to go outside. However, it’s not nearly as beautiful as this one from Monika Hibbs Home. When I saw it, I knew it would be perfect for her, so I can’t wait to get it installed!

I fell in love with these mudrooms designed by The Fox Group - from the floor to ceiling storage, brass hardware, shiplap detailing, and storage drawers, no space was left unaccounted for. It inspired me to come up with a similar, albeit, less formal design for our own mudroom area.

I’ve also loved following along Mackenzie Horan’s Connecticut home renovation. Her mudroom is light and bright and airy, but feels closer to what I envision for our space with open storage and cubbies up top. I love the sconces she added, as well as the custom bench cushions.

Ultimately, I plan to incorporate design elements from all of these images! I love the idea of closable drawers on the floor, to allow for storing some unsightly things like gardening shoes or flip flops. We’ll have open storage areas up top though, and four cubby spaces which I plan find baskets for. I plan to add two sconces above the hall tree, and brass hooks to hang coats and bags. I’d also love to add shiplap to the back for an added element like the design pictured below.

I am so excited to finally be working on this project, and I can’t wait to see how it comes out and share it with you all! Let me know if you have any questions about the process in the comments below.
